Mani Bhadra BV – Phoenix Import offers a wide range of Californian White Sage smudge sticks, clusters and bundles. White sage, or Salvia apiana, is a popular herb to use in purification rituals and ceremonies. A domestic plant to North-America, it was used by Native Americans in many of their ancient rituals. The main purpose was to cleanse a person’s mind and soul of earthly thoughts and worries, and to open them up to higher states of consciousness. With a calm and pure mind, they could more easily get into contact with their ancestors and nature’s intrinsic wisdom. Not only White Sage and Shasta Sage, but also Yerba Santa (Eriodictyon californicum) – “the holy herb” – was used for these kind of rituals, specifically to clear away mental projections, subconscious fears and trauma.
White Sage is often sold in bundles so as to smudge a person’s aura and/or the space where a purification ceremony will take place, such as a Sweat Lodge. We at Phoenix Import sell White Sage smudge sticks in different sizes and amounts.
Phoenix Import’s White Sage Smudge sticks come from California and are harvested in a sustainable way so as not to damage the local ecosystems. Also our Yerba Santa and Shasta Sage come from California. Shasta Sage is known to have a more subtle, softer aroma than White Sage.
A white sage stick or bundle is the exact same thing, just a different word is been used. The same holds for white sage clusters, it is all white sage bound together with a string for easy use in smudging.
We also supply larger quantities of white sage, both loose white sage and sticks. Contact our customer service if you wish to purchase white sage in bulk.
To burn white sage, you can combine it perfectly with a fire-proof terracotta dish, a soapstone incense bowl or Abalone shell together with a soft brush to clean them after use. Check our incense accessories category to see what fits your customer’s needs.
Not only native Americans had the habit of smudging during ceremonies. In Europe, smudging has been a part for centuries in many natural religions and traditions like (Modern) Paganism and Wicca. These traditions are closely connected to Nature’s Wisdom and love to work with the elements.
In using an Abalone Shell for smudging, the shell represents the Water element. The (white) sage or other herbs represent the Earth element. The smoke is the Air element, and the burning is the Fire element. To harmonise the elements, is one of the reasons why smudging with a shell is often the preferred way. Also, the natural holes in the shell create an organic air flow that helps spread the incense.
