The Medicine Buddha is the buddha of healing, of both body and mind. He is depicted in a deep blue, lapis lazuli-coloured form, holding in his lap a bowl of healing nectar. His right hand rests open over his knee in the gesture of generosity, holding the branch of the myrobalan, a beneficial plant that symbolises all the medicines in the world. This gesture reflects his willingness to relieve the suffering of all beings.
Reciting and meditating on the mantra of the Medicine Buddha is traditionally held to support the healing of body and mind, and helps to release the inner causes of suffering, such as ignorance, attachment and aversion. His mantra is: TAYATA OM BEKANDZE BEKANDZE MAHA BEKANDZE RADZA SAMUDGATE SOHA.
