Saraswati (Tibetan: Yangchenma; "Great Sound Mother") is in both Hinduism and Buddhism the goddess of music, poetry, eloquence and science. She is traditionally depicted with her vina, a stringed instrument. In its strings arise the vibrations of creation, expanding around her like waves.
Because the Vedic language Sanskrit also arises from these vibrations, she carries a manuscript of the Vedas, one of the oldest bodies of text preserved. As patroness of the written word, she is invoked by students, artists, speakers and many others.
Shown here in her form as Yangchen Lhamo, she is regarded as an emanation of Tara Buddha. Her posture, with one leg extended, reflects her readiness to come to the aid of those who call upon her.
