Shiva is a divine figure in Hinduism. He is known as the destroyer of all evil and is often depicted with a trident. Shiva is the consort of Parvati and the father of Ganesha.
The cosmic dance of Shiva Nataraj, king (raja) of the dance (nata), is seen as a symbol of the ever-moving universe. Shiva Nataraj is usually surrounded by a ring of flames, which offers protection against disturbing outside influences, while also representing the fire that destroys the old to make way for the new, symbolising the eternal cycle of existence. In his right hand he holds a small drum, representing the rhythm of creation. His mantra is Aum, the primal sound from which creation arose. With another hand Shiva makes the mudra of reassurance. In one of his left hands he holds a flame as a symbol of destruction and renewal. The downward-curving left arm symbolises humility.
