Shiva is a divine figure in Hinduism. Known as the destroyer of all evil, Shiva is often depicted with a trident. He is the husband of Parvati and the father of Ganesh.
The cosmic dance of Shiva Nataraja as the king (raja) of dance (nata) is seen as a symbol of the eternal motion of the universe. He represents the fire of destruction that gives birth to the new — symbolizing the eternal cycle of existence. In one right hand he holds a drum, symbolizing the rhythm of creation. His mantra is Aum, the primordial sound from which creation emerged. With his second right hand he makes the gesture of reassurance. One left hand holds a torch or flame, representing destruction and renewal. The lowered left arm symbolizes humility.
