Crescent moon

The crescent is one of humanity's oldest symbols. In ancient Mesopotamia it stood for the moon god Sin, and from Egypt to Greece the moon was tied to gods and goddesses, from Thoth and Chandra to Artemis and Diana. As the counterpart of the sun, the crescent is generally linked with the feminine and the nocturnal.

The waxing crescent has long been read as a sign of growth and new beginnings, the moment to set something in motion. In the Islamic world the crescent, often paired with a star, became a widespread emblem. Through the centuries the crescent has remained bound up with intuition, imagination and the hidden side of existence.
