In both Hinduism and Buddhism, Ganesha is the deity associated with new beginnings, wisdom and prosperity, and is known above all as the remover of obstacles. As the son of Shiva and Parvati, he also bears the name Ganapati, "lord of the ganas", the celestial retinues of his father.
He is depicted with an elephant's head and a round belly. With his trunk he reaches for the modaka (a kind of sweet) in his hand, which symbolises the merit of wisdom.
He is often accompanied by a small mouse at his feet. This mouse is the so-called 'vahana' or vehicle of Ganesha. The contrast between the elephant-headed deity and this tiny figure tells a story of its own: in an abstract sense, the mouse can be seen as an emblem of the gnawing of our restless mind, and in a very practical sense as a persistent pest to the harvest. As the remover of obstacles, Ganesha curbs both the inner and the outer troublemaker.
