Description

The Wind Gong is a traditional Chinese percussion instrument. It is also very popular in the West.

A gong beater is included for free. We recommend you also order a gong bag, for safe storage and transportation.

Please note: These gongs can have small 'blisters' on their surface, this cannot be 100% avoided for handmade gongs. It is a normal phenomenon, it is not a hole or a dent, it is a bubble of the molten copper and does not affect the sound or lifespan of the gong.

The black colour on this gong is the original colour it has when it comes out of the oven. The pattern is created by latheing the gong, thus removing the oxidised outer layer.

Wind Gongs
Wind gongs are flat bronze discs, with little fundamental pitch, heavy tuned overtones, and long sustain. They are made of electrolytic copper and tin. Traditionally, a wind gong is played with a large soft mallet, which gives it a roaring crash to match their namesake.

Played with a nylon tip drumstick they sound rather like the coil chimes in a mantle clock. Some have holes in the centre, but they are mounted like all suspended gongs by other holes near the rim. The smaller sizes (7"-12" /18 – 30 cms) have a more bell-like tone due to their thickness and small diameter.

Lotus
The lotus flower is a symbol of purity in many cultures. It grows in murky waters, but emerges from the mud unsoiled. As such, it serves as a parable to our own pure nature rising from the troubled waters of circumstance, and into the light of equanimity.
