Lotus

The lotus is rooted in the mud, rises through murky water and unfolds immaculate above the surface, the water beading off its petals without ever staining them. In this lies the heart of its meaning: purity and awakening that arise out of the mud, not in spite of the world the flower is rooted in but because of it. In Buddhism the lotus, padma, stands for the mind that blooms in the midst of samsara without being defiled by it; buddhas and bodhisattvas are shown seated upon a lotus throne, and the flower sounds again in the prayer om mani padme hum, ‘the jewel in the lotus’.

The lotus is one of the oldest sacred symbols of Asia and the Near East. In Hinduism creation springs from a lotus rising from the navel of Vishnu, and deities such as Lakshmi and Saraswati are seated upon the flower; the chakras are pictured as lotuses. In ancient Egypt the blue lotus closed at night and opened at sunrise, and so became a sign of the sun, of creation and of rebirth. The lotus is found as jewellery, in imagery and upon the altar.

Amethyst | Named from the Greek for 'not intoxicated' and historically worn to ward off drunkenness. Associated with spiritual protection, intuition and inner calm, and used as a meditation stone. Believed to transmute lower energies, ease insomnia and nightmares, and quiet an overactive mind.
