All-seeing eye

The all-seeing eye is the image of an eye that perceives everything: a gaze nothing escapes, often linked to the divine, the cosmic or the highest consciousness. The motif arises independently in countless cultures, for the eye is by nature the organ of knowing; to see all is to know all. As such the eye stands for omniscience and watchfulness, and equally for protection, since a gaze that watches over you also keeps you safe.

Alongside that outward gaze, the all-seeing eye also looks inward. In the Eastern traditions it is linked to the third eye, the eye of insight between the brows, the ajna point and the eye of Shiva, which sees further than the senses reach. There the all-seeing eye becomes a sign of inner vision, of wisdom and of the awakening of a perception that looks straight through the surface. In a modern spiritual context it lives on in just this way: as a reminder of attention, clear seeing and a consciousness that is awake.
