Angel wings

Wings are the mark of the angel, the messenger who moves between heaven and earth. In Judaism, Christianity and Islam the angels are intermediaries who carry word and will between the divine and the human, and their wings stand for that freedom of passage, for swiftness and for a nature that is not bound to the ground. A pair of wings on their own has come to stand for the angel entire, and so for protection and a watchful, guarding presence; worn in memory of someone who has died, it speaks of a love that is felt to continue and to keep watch.

Winged beings are far older than the angel as we picture it now. The art of Mesopotamia and Egypt is full of winged guardians and protectors, and the Greeks gave wings to Victory and to Love; everywhere the wing marks a being that belongs to the heavens and crosses with ease between the worlds. The motif passed into the imagery of the angel and remains one of its plainest signs. Angel wings are found as jewellery, in imagery and upon the altar, often kept close as a token of protection and remembrance.
