Crescent moon
The crescent is the thin sliver of moon that appears just after the dark of the new moon and again just before it returns to darkness, the slender curve of light by which the lunar month opens and closes. Because it is the moon at its beginning, the crescent has long stood for growth, potential and new beginnings, for what is not yet full but is on its way. Its upturned shape, like a bowl or a pair of horns, has made it across many cultures an emblem of the receptive and the feminine.
The crescent is among the oldest symbols known. In ancient Mesopotamia it was the sign of the moon god Sin, and in the classical world it belonged to lunar goddesses such as Artemis, Selene and Diana, often worn as a diadem upon the brow. Paired with a star it became, much later, an emblem of the Ottoman Empire and so a widely recognised sign in the Islamic world, although its use as a symbol long predates that association. Today the crescent is found as jewellery, in imagery and upon the altar, a quiet reminder of cycles, renewal and the light that always returns.
