Moon phases

The moon phases show the full cycle the moon passes through, from the dark of the new moon through the waxing crescent to the full moon and back again through the waning crescent to darkness. The moon gives no light of its own; what we see is sunlight returned to us, and the shape that grows and fades is the shadow of the earth’s turning. As an image the cycle stands for change and renewal: nothing stays full, nothing stays dark, and what wanes returns. It is a reminder of impermanence and of the rhythm in which growth, fullness and release follow one another.

The moon has measured time for as long as people have watched the sky; the month takes its very name from it, and many calendars, among them the Islamic, Hebrew and Chinese, still follow it. Its pull moves the tides, and across many traditions it is linked with the feminine, with intuition and with the inner, reflective side of life. In contemporary practice the phases are often used to mark a cycle of intention, the new moon for beginnings and the full moon for what has come to fruition. The moon phases are found as jewellery, in imagery and upon the altar.
