Eye of Providence
The Eye of Providence is a single, all-seeing eye, usually enclosed in a triangle and surrounded by rays of light. The eye stands for the gaze of God watching over humankind, the triangle for the Trinity. In this form it appeared in the Christian art of the Renaissance and the Baroque, where it pictured the omniscience and care of the divine: nothing escapes it, and in that gaze lies both oversight and protection.
The shape inevitably calls up a far older eye, the Eye of Horus of ancient Egypt, the restored eye of the falcon god, a symbol of protection, healing and royal power. There is no direct line of descent, but the resemblance has fed the imagination ever since. In the eighteenth century Freemasonry took up the eye as a sign of the Great Architect of the Universe watching over the work, and it appeared, hovering above an unfinished pyramid, on the Great Seal of the United States and so on the dollar bill, though by no means all of its designers were Masons.
It was that last leap, from altarpiece to banknote, that gave the eye its modern second life. It became the favourite emblem of conspiracy culture, the supposed mark of the Illuminati and the secret world order, and has since turned up in tattoos, on album covers, in fashion prints and countless memes. What once expressed divine care now reads just as easily as oversight, surveillance or hidden power; and some reclaim it once more, as a sign of watchfulness, insight and the inner eye that sees clearly.
